Who is the real you? Is it the person your friends talk about? Is it the person staring back at you in the mirror? Or is it someone you pretend to be in public or around new acquaintances? The real you is the one who God says you are in the Bible.
Have you ever looked in the Bible to see who God says you are? You can begin to find out who you are in the first chapter of Genesis.
26 Then God said, “Let Us make man in Our image, according to Our likeness; let them have dominion over the fish of the sea, over the birds of the air, and over the cattle, over all the earth and over every creeping thing that creeps on the earth.” 27 So God created man in His own image; in the image of God He created him; male and female He created them. 28 Then God blessed them, and God said to them, “Be fruitful and multiply; fill the earth and subdue it; have dominion over the fish of the sea, over the birds of the air, and over every living thing that moves on the earth.”
God says He has made us in His own image. Let that sink in for a minute. We’ve been made to be just like God. Of course, God is saying that it is our spirit that is the same as His. We can look around to see that each of us has a different appearance, but I believe God is talking about who He made us to be; it is our spirit that has been made to be just like God.
The Hebrew word for “made” or “make” is “asah” which means to do or make, and speaks to forming or molding something from existing materials. The Hebrew word “bara” is translated “created” and it means to create out of nothing. If we look back at Genesis 1:26-28, we see that both of these words were used and I believe we can say that man was created and made. God formed Adam from the dust of the earth and then He breathed His own spirit into Adam thus creating Adam into the likeness of God.
Who does God say that you are?
- His workmanship (Ephesians 2:10) – We are His creation
- Chosen, a royal priesthood (1 Peter 2:9) – God chose us to belong to Him and live a life of royalty
- God’s temple (1 Corinthians 3:16) – We are a temple and God Almighty dwells (lives, abides) in us
- Righteous (2 Corinthians 5:21) – In Christ we are the righteousness of God
- More than conquerors (Romans 8:37) – We are victorious through the God who loves us.
- Adopted as sons/daughters (Ephesians 1:5) – Through Jesus Christ we’ve been adopted
Search the scriptures to find the real you. Believe what the Word of God says versus what you are feeling and seeing in your natural environment. Your emotions are not the real you. As a believer, you have the Holy Spirit living inside of you with the Fruit of the Holy Spirit, which is love, joy, peace, longsuffering, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness, and self-control (Galatians 5:22-23).
The real you is who God says you are. Choose to operate and walk in who God says you are. In order to walk in the Spirit, read, study, and meditate on the scriptures and then believe they are the truth. You will receive revelation knowledge from the Holy Spirit, and God’s Word will become more real to you than what you are experiencing.
You are more than your feelings and emotions.
