I love the story of the woman with the issue of blood that is found in Matthew 9, Mark 5, and Luke 8. Her story and journey parallels with my healing journey. This woman would have been familiar with the scriptures in the Old Testament, especially Malachi 4:2: “The sun of righteousness shall arise with healing in His wings.”
In Mark’s account of her story in Mark 5:27, it says that the woman had heard about Jesus. What did she hear? I believe she heard that there was a prophet or a teacher by the name of Jesus who was going from town-to-town healing people. She had been suffering with an issue of blood for 12 years and no one was able to help her. Her situation was desperate and whatever she had heard about Jesus, she believed she would receive healing if she touched the hem of His garment.
Jesus would have been wearing the traditional Jewish prayer shawl and at the bottom of the shawl were tassels. Those tassels are called “wings.” As the woman pushed her way through the crowd that had gathered around Jesus as He entered her town of Capernaum, she was determined to reach Him and touch Him to receive her healing. I believe this woman was crawling on the ground to reach Him because she would have been very weak from the amount of bleeding she had experienced over the years, and she wouldn’t have been able to stand next to Him or near enough to Him to bend over and touch the hem of His garment while in a crowd.
When she reached Jesus and touched His “wings,” Mark 5:29 says, the fountain of blood immediately dried up and her body was healed of the affliction. She knew she received instant healing and believed without a shadow of a doubt that she was healed. Not only did she know, but so did Jesus. Mark 5:30 says that Jesus also knew immediately that healing power had gone out from His own body. The scripture says that Jesus turned around in the crowd and asked the question, “Who touched my clothes?” (Mark 5:30). He knew that someone with faith touched Him and drew out the healing power.
The woman fell down at Jesus’ feet and told Him the whole story of what she had been through for the last 12 years. In Mark 5:34, Jesus said to her, “Daughter, your faith has made you well. Go in peace and be healed of your affliction.” Her faith pulled on the healing power that was in Jesus and she received her healing. She knew there was healing in His wings.
I had a similar experience. As I heard that Jesus is the Healer and learned from the scriptures that God wanted me well from the traumatic brain injury that plagued my life for 13 ½ years, I also touched the hem of His garment. Of course, my touch was spiritual versus her physical touch.
As a believer, you have the Healer (Jesus) living inside of you and you can also touch His “wings” by reading, meditating, and speaking His Word. That is what I did. As I read and studied the Word, seeds were planted into my heart (spirit). Those seeds took root and birthed the belief and knowledge that when Jesus went to the cross over 2,000 years ago, the stripes He took on His back were for the brain injury that I had sustained from a car accident. Even though I still had symptoms in my body, I believed the words Isaiah wrote in Isaiah 53:5 that say, “by His stripes, we are healed” and what Peter wrote in 1 Peter 2:24, “by whose stripes you were healed.” Those two scriptures became more real to me than the symptoms I had been living with and experiencing. Those stripes were not only for the brain injury but for all diseases, disabilities, pain, and sickness.
Don’t wait for your body to tell you that you are healed; know in your spirit that God sent His Word (Jesus) to earth to take your sickness and pain so that you can say, “by His stripes, I am healed” and know (just like the woman with the issue of blood) that there is “healing in His wings.”
