What is the “mountain” in your life? Is it sickness, pain, poverty, depression, anxiety, doubt, unbelief, grief, or stress? The list could go on and on; however, I listed several in order to convey the idea.
There was a TV show in 2003 through 2020 called Extreme Makeover: Home Edition. Typically, each episode was about a family facing hardship living in a beat-up, run-down house that (most of the time) needed to be rebuilt. The family was whisked away for a week while the crew tore down the house and built a brand new, larger, fully furnished home. The construction was accomplished with the help of a large army of volunteers and a wide array of sponsor-donated products and services. Once the house was completed, the host, family, friends, and those who helped to renovate would stand beside a huge bus that was hiding the newly renovated house, and yell, “Move that Bus.” As the bus pulled away, the family would be shocked with happy tears rolling down their faces as the crowd cheered at the awesome, newly extreme makeover.
If you are dealing with sickness, pain, or any of the situations listed above or maybe you have added one to this list, and might be identifying with the beat-up, run-down house (and that “house” is your body), I have good news! Instead of saying, “Move that Bus,” you can say, “Move this Mountain.” You might be wondering if “Move this Mountain” is in the Bible?” Yes, it is! Let’s look at Matthew 17:20. “So Jesus said to them, “Because of your unbelief; for assuredly, I say to you, if you have faith as a mustard seed, you will say to this mountain, ‘Move from here to there,’ and it will move; and nothing will be impossible for you.” Another scripture reference to speaking to a mountain is Mark 11:22-23 where Jesus responds to His disciples and says, “So Jesus answered and said to them, “Have faith in God. 23 For assuredly, I say to you, whoever says to this mountain, ‘Be removed and be cast into the sea,’ and does not doubt in his heart, but believes that those things he says will be done, he will have whatever he says.” Matthew 21:21 says, “So Jesus answered and said to them, “Assuredly, I say to you, if you have faith and do not doubt, you will not only do what was done to the fig tree, but also if you say to this mountain, ‘Be removed and be cast into the sea,’ it will be done.”
In each of these scriptures, Jesus is telling His disciples, followers, and ultimately each one of us, to speak to our mountain and do not doubt or have any unbelief. Many people struggle in the area of faith, doubt, and unbelief. Many times, when I pray for others, they ask for an increase of faith or they want to convince me they have faith because someone has told them otherwise. I think the main cause(s) could be doubt and/or unbelief that they aren’t even aware of. It could also mean that they have never spoken to their mountain (pain, sickness, anxiety, etc.).
It is possible to have faith and not see the desired outcome you are praying for because unbelief and doubt have the ability to counteract your faith. If you were to play a game of tug of war and you grabbed the rope and pulled on it without your opponent holding that rope, there would be no resistance. However, if the person on the other end is pulling while you are pulling at the same time, there is an opposing force against you. That opposing force is doubt and unbelief. You don’t need great faith to see the manifestation of the healing or miracle you are praying for, just pure faith without the opposing forces of doubt and unbelief.
These scriptures show that Jesus is saying that we have the power and ability to speak to the mountains in our lives. Just like when the crowd yelled for that bus to move and it did, you have the power and authority to tell the mountains in your life to move and they will as long as you have the faith to believe and do not mix it with doubt and unbelief.
Picture Jesus and a host of angels standing beside you yelling, “Move that Mountain!”
