Today, as we are remembering Sept. 11, 2001 with many different emotions, it is important to also remember that God has never forgotten His promise that He will never forget us! Isaiah 49:15 says, “Can a woman forget her nursing child, and not have compassion on the son of her womb? Surely, they may forget, yet I will not forget you.” It is impossible for God, our Father, to forget any one of His children and to love and care for them. We may have experienced parents who did not love or care for us; however, this verse shows that our Heavenly Father has never and will never forget us.
We can trust in the Lord to love and care for us by reading what God says in the scriptures. There are many scripture verses that remind us not to forget the amazing things God has done for His people. In the Old Testament days, when something significant happened like an encounter with God, a memorial was put up in that place so the people would not forget. Jewish parents passed down stories from generation to generation to ensure no one would ever forget what God had done in their lives. We are blessed today to know of these stories through the scriptures and other literature.
Most of us remember birthdays, anniversaries, and holidays such as Passover, Christmas, and Easter. But do we take the time to remember all that God has done for us? He sent His Son to be beaten and crucified so that we can have a personal relationship with Almighty God, the Father, and experience eternal life right here and now. Psalm 103:2 says, “Bless the Lord, O my soul, And forget none of His benefits.” What are these benefits that God doesn’t want us to forget? These benefits are forgiveness, healing, deliverance, and prosperity, to name a few.
Jesus modeled what we call “The Lord’s Supper” or “Communion” as a way to remember Him and not forget what He did for us at the cross.
1 Corinthians 11:23-26 – 23 For I received from the Lord that which I also delivered to you: that the Lord Jesus on the same night in which He was betrayed took bread; 24 and when He had given thanks, He broke it and said, “Take, eat; this is My body which is broken for you; do this in remembrance of Me.” 25 In the same manner He also took the cup after supper, saying, “This cup is the new covenant in My blood. This do, as often as you drink it, in remembrance of Me.” 26 For as often as you eat this bread and drink this cup, you proclaim the Lord’s death till He comes.
Psalm 78:7 says to put our confidence in God and not to forget the works that God did for us. Proverbs 4:5 instructs us to acquire wisdom and understanding so we don’t forget and turn away from God’s Word.
God is telling you not to forget His Word and what He has done for you. I believe if you are struggling in any area of your life, then you need to get into God’s Word and find His promises for that particular area or situation. Study what that scripture is telling you, meditate on it, ask the Holy Spirit for revelation knowledge, and then never forget what God reveals to you.
For me and my healing journey, I will never forget the incredible milestones along the way. I remember the day the accident happened, the first time I could walk up a flight of stairs without struggling or in pain, the first time getting up an incline or hill, laughing at a joke I could finally understand, and, ultimately the moment when my brain was radically healed and made whole. I embrace each and every moment—the good and the challenging—as I never want to forget what happened to me on that fateful day in January when my entire life changed. If I forget or block out the accident, the pain, and the cognitive deficit, I won’t be able to celebrate the amazing healing journey and my glorious Jehovah Rapha (the God who heals) who carried me through the journey and completely healed and restored my life.
Today, on September 11, the National Day of Service and Remembrance, take time to remember all the amazing things God has done for you and thank Him that He has never forgotten you!
