What does it mean to resist? The word “resist” is an
action verb meaning to withstand the action of something, to try to
prevent by action or argument, to exert force in opposition, to
withstand the force or effect, to oppose, to stand against.
An
enemy can be a negative thought, sickness, anxiety, stress, worry, and
even financial challenges. Whatever you think your enemy is, it is
robbing you from all that God has for you. If your focus and attention
is on this negative situation, it will be hard to resist it because you
are embracing it. You can’t resist what you embrace.
When
we don’t know the true nature of God or that His Word is truth, it is
easy for the enemy to lie or to deceive us. He has no power unless we
give it to him through deceptions, lies, and/or acquisitions. 2 Corinthians 2:11
says, “lest Satan should take advantage of us; for we are not ignorant
of his devices.” How do we not become ignorant of his devices? Through
studying the Word of God and knowing God and His truth. John 8:32
says, “And you shall know the truth, and the truth shall make you
free.” This is speaking about having an experience with God, knowing Him
like Adam “knew” Eve and a child was born. It is an intimacy that only
comes through this experience. When we experience this intimacy with
God, it is harder for sickness, stress, worry, etc. to attack us and rob
us from the blessings God has in store for us.
As
we draw closer to God through this intimate relationship, it is easier
for us to believe and know that He has already provided healing at the
cross. As a born-again believer we aren’t trying to get healed, we are
the healed resisting sickness, worry, anxiety, oppression, etc.
Here are a few suggestions on how you can resist the enemy!
- Know God – know what His Word says and what His promises say about your situation. One promise from God is all I needed as my healing anchor scripture. “By His stripes I am healed.” (Isaiah 53:5)
- Submit to God – James 4:7 says, “Therefore submit to God. Resist the devil and he will flee from you.” Sickness is of the devil. The word “submit” means yield to a superior force or to the authority or will of another person. This shows us we can either yield and give our authority over to sickness (the enemy) or to God. Let’s choose God.
- Draw near to God – James 4:8 says, “Draw near to God and He will draw near to you.” Get closer to God by spending time with Him and asking for His help for your situation—not by begging God to heal you, but to ask Him to reveal Himself and help you to understand what He has already done for you.
- Stop listening – Pain and sickness have a voice. You can either listen to the pain that might be screaming at you or resist it by listening to what God says, “I am the Lord that heals” (Exodus 15:26); “My Word is life to you and health to all your flesh.” (Proverbs 4:22)
- Speak to your mountain – Mark 11:23 says, “For assuredly, I say to you, whoever says to this mountain, ‘Be removed and be cast into the sea.’ And does not doubt in his heart, but believes that those things he says will be done, he will have whatever he says.” Speak to your situation and don’t come into agreement with a lie but God’s truth. Let God’s truth become more real to you than your situation.
- Close your mouth – don’t dwell on your situation and tell everyone you meet what is wrong or happening to you. If you continue to speak about your negative situation, it will be magnified. It doesn’t mean deny what you are going through; however, it is better to magnify God and His truth than magnify your symptoms. The more you speak about your symptoms; you are giving the enemy the access codes to your life.
Believe on what Jesus has already done over 2,000 years ago when He bore those stripes for sickness, depression, pain, anxiety, oppression, etc. Know that Jesus is the Healer that lives inside of each born again believer. Rest in the finished work of Jesus and the enemy cannot even come near you.
