You may be familiar with the story of Peter walking on water; however, I believe Peter walked on more than just water. He walked on Jesus’ command to “come.” In order to fully understand this, we need to look at what was happening before Peter decided to step out of the boat in the middle of a storm.
In Matthew 14, Jesus and the disciples fed five thousand men, women and children, with five loaves of bread and two fish. Jesus’ disciples saw Him take the loaves, look up to Heaven, bless and break them and give them to the disciples who distributed them to the multitudes that came to hear Jesus teach.
The story continues with the disciples gathering up twelve baskets full of broken pieces that remained after everyone was full. Immediately after this, Jesus told His disciples to get into a boat and go to the other side while Jesus remained and sent the multitudes away.
The boat was in the middle of the sea being tossed by waves when the disciples saw Jesus walking on the water. They cried out in fear thinking Jesus to be a ghost. Jesus spoke to them saying, “Be of good cheer! It is I; do not be afraid” (Matthew 14:27). Peter, seeing the Lord, put a demand on Him by asking, “If it is you, Jesus, command me to come.”
Peter stepped out of the boat on Jesus’ Word, “come.” Jesus couldn’t deny that it was Him when Peter asked. Peter walked on God’s Word, “come,” which enabled this miracle, and we can do the same. There are many scriptures where Jesus commands us to do something. These commands enable us to walk on His Word.
- Make
Disciples
- Matthew 28:19-20, “19Therefore go and make disciples of all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit, 20and teaching them to obey everything I have commanded you. And surely I am with you always, to the very end of the age.”
- Preach
the Gospel
- Mark 16:15 “And He said to them, “Go into all the world and preach the gospel to all creation.”
What was special about Peter walking on Jesus’ command was that he got to experience a miracle with Jesus when he stepped out of the boat and walked on the water. Many focus on Peter taking his eyes off the Lord which caused him to sink, but we should also look at the fact that he was the only other person besides Jesus to walk on the water (that we know of).
Before Peter walked on the water, he first walked on the rhema word “come.” The Greek word “rhema” means a thing spoken, a word or saying of any kind, as a command, report, promise. Faith comes when a word from God is quickened to your heart. What many people call faith is not faith, because it is not founded on the revealed word (will) of God to an individual. Peter had the rhema word “come.” It is important for you to seek God for your own rhema word, so you can walk on God’s Word. You can’t act on someone else’s word from God. Don’t throw away your glasses or medicine because you heard someone else did that and received a healing manifestation. Your healing will come from hearing from God and acting on His promises for you.
The Bible is full of healing scriptures and promises. If you are dealing with any challenges, whether they are health related or anything else, seek the promises, commands and what God says about your situation. As you do, meditate on them and ask the Holy Spirit to reveal to you what God is saying and listen for God to speak your own rhema word and you will be able to walk on God’s Word, too!
